      <title>Diversification of oil economics</title>
      <link>https://dspace.aud.edu:443/jspui/handle/123456789/88</link>
      <description>Title: Diversification of oil economics
Authors: Habibollah, Kamran
Abstract: This thesis is an empirical study of the diversification of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its neighboring Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member-states. Using several quantitative analysis methodologies from the field of regional economics, this report will investigate whether the UAE has a diversified economy, and if so, how and why it has achieved this feat. This report will also make recommendations for further diversification attempts in light of the competitive landscape of the Middle East. &#xD;
We start by defining the term "diversification" and other key related terms such as, "growth' and "stability' in order to help us classify previous empirical theories into two categories: (i) hypotheses relating diversification to stability, and (ii) hypotheses relating diversification to growth. Next, we apply these hypotheses to the key economic indicators of the UAE in order to determine if, according to each hypothesis' definition, the UAE economy can be classified as diversified. Next, we apply the same hypotheses to other GCC states, and compare the results, to see the UAE's standing relative to similar economies. Finally, this report will make recommendations of strategies the UAE government needs to adopt in order to improve their diversification drive. &#xD;
This thesis will find that between 1996 and 2000, the UAE has had an unstable, but rapidly growing, economy compared to other GCC countries. However, since 2000, realizing that such rapid growth is unsustainable, the UAE government has tried to regulate and streamline its economic growth by channeling its resources (national budget and labor force) into the services (e.g., financial services, travel, and tourism, etc.) sector. We will also see that as of 2005, compared to other GCC states, the UAE has adopted relatively conservative growth strategies to ensure economic stability and longevity
Description: A Master of Business Administration (MBA) thesis by Kamran Habibollah, submitted in July, 2007. Thesis advisor is Dr. Jihad S. Nader. The motivation behind this thesis was to study the diversification of the oil economies, specifically, that of the UAE and its neighboring GCC states. Despite the plethora of empirical research in economic diversification and performance, there is a void in the correlation between economic performance (growth) and the economic stability and, empirical studies on the diversification of the UAE. The goal of this report was to conduct an exhaustive study of the most widely-used analytical tools, determine whether or not one can find a correlation between diversification and economic growth and stability and determine how and why the UAE economy is a diversifying one. The findings of this report indicate that by considering the results of several analytical tools, one can determine, for any economy, whether or not that economy is diversifying and how this diversification affects that economy's stability...._FROM chapter 4, p.55 of the thesis. <title>Mergers and acquisitions</title>

      <description>Title: Mergers and acquisitions
Authors: Zeineldine, Salim A
Abstract: Mergers and acquisitions are global trends that have characterized the business world throughout the last decade with thousands of deals taking place every year, most of which involving banks.The United States witnessed periods of high merger activity, also known as waves. As for Europe, the introduction of the euro accelerated the merger trend; many European countries finished the consolidation process, some are halfway through, while the rest have just started undertaking this process. Concerning Japan, the burst of the economic bubble drove banks to undertake mergers, many of which were mega-mergers. Developing countries initiated this process lately due to liberalization and the growing foreign competition. &#xD;
&#xD;
This study will assess the merger and acquisition activity in the United Arab Emirates by stressing on its impact on the banking sector, in particular, and on the national economy, in general. We will have a case study on one of the mergers that took place in the UAE, namely between Emirates Bank International (EBI) and National Bank of Dubai (NBD), which merged to create one of the Middle East's largest banks with assets of Dh 165 billion.

      <title>Consumer behavior</title>
      <link>https://dspace.aud.edu:443/jspui/handle/123456789/85</link>
      <description>Title: Consumer behavior
Authors: Whitehead, Sandra M
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the consumption patterns of women in the United Arab Emirates. It focused on several key determinants that were thought to affect women's consumption as suggested by Consumer Behavior Theory. Little to no marketing research has been done on the consumption of women in this region, so studies that focus on determining how women consume are very necessary. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter I is an overall preview of the project. It gives the background of women in the Gulf as well as the overall purpose of the study and the key determinants that will be looked at. Product selection and research methodology will also be briefly introduced. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter II is an overview of Consumer Behavior Theory. It focuses on the Marketing Concept, Models of Consumer Behavior, the psychology of Consumer Behavior, the Law of Demand and the concept of Utility. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter III is a review of literature. It breaks down each determinant one by one and discusses previous studies that have been done, that were useful precedents to the study done here in the United Arab Emirates. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter IV is an explanation of the research design. It discusses the research question and then the hypotheses that will be tested in the study. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter V goes into detail on the research methodology and data. It discusses how the research was collected, the research tools that were used and how the data was organized. It also gives brief descriptions on MANOVA and multiple regression techniques that were used to analyze the data.&#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter VI is a data analysis and description of the results that were obtained in the study. It states which results were significant using the MANOVA and regression techniques. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter VII is a discussion of the results. It was determined that many of the determinants that were thought to be significant were in fact not significant. It gives possible reasons as to why these results may have been obtained. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter VIII discusses the limitations of the study. It gives a discussion as to why there may have been error in conducting the research and what could have been done differently to obtain better results, such as the sampling procedure and data collection techniques. &#xD;
&#xD;
Chapter IX finally discusses the conclusions and recommendations for conducting similar research in the future. Because the results in this study were not the expected results, similar studies should be conducted making modifications on the sampling procedures and data collection methods. Because women are important consumers it is important to continue research that gives insight into their consumption patterns.
